Acoustic Guitar Tabs – Tips on Guitar Fingering July 27, 2011 at 2:07 pm
Some tips that could help take the strain off your fingers when playing acoustic guitar chords are as follows:
1. Most beginners use their thumbs to take hold of the low E string when playing the G major chord. This is wrong. The general rule in playing guitar chords is not to use the thumb, although there are a few instances that require the use of the left thumb to press down on a bass string.
2. For some reason, beginning guitar players usually think that they shouldn’t be using their pinkie fingers at all when playing chords. On the contrary, the pinkie finger plays a central role if you wish to broaden your knowledge of chords! The reason that different chord positions and variations exist is to make switching from one chord to another much easier. Without proper fingering techniques, you limit yourself with regard to the number of chords you can actually play.
3. Just keep practicing. The longer hours that you play, the more your fingers will start to get accustomed to what they are doing. Develop finger strength by engaging in finger exercises such as finger stretching and finger weights. Soon, you will find that as your fingers get stronger, it also becomes easier for you to change from one chord to another.
4. Practice is vital in guitar fingering but refrain from practicing too much at the onset of your lessons. The way the fingers’ strength is developed is the same as the way a body’s strength is increased. Injured or strained fingers are usually cause by doing too much too soon. Give yourself enough time to learn without straining yourself.
Even with all these tips under your belt, remember that experiencing some finger pain is completely normal as you familiarize yourself with guitar-playing techniques and continue to practice. It simply comes with the territory. As odd as it may sound, one of the quickest ways to dull the pain is to allow calluses to form in your fingers. As the clich goes: no pain, no gain. Your hard work will pay off in the end when playing acoustic guitar chords.
