How To Learn The Piano March 28, 2010 at 1:34 pm

If you are a complete beginner or if you were taught when you were a child and left it, to begin playing the keyboards or the piano you will need to take some type of tuition. Which ever applies to you, the methodology for learning stays the same.

You might find that there are a lot of different methods to teach the piano or keyboards but in general they will all have to teach you the same basic material. A lot of beginners nowadays will be playing on keyboards instead of a normal piano but for a newcomer the methods will be similar. The aim of most people who start with piano lessons today could be to be able to read music, to be able to play a little classical music, and in many cases to be able to play in various styles like jazz, pop, rock etc. They might also want to learn how to accompany singers and other instrumentalist.

As a beginner, to have such ambition might appear somewhat ambitious but before you embark on your learning journey you will need to get clear what you want to get out of it. If you put your mind to it you will soon be accomplishing many of your goals.

Learn To Play Piano Keyboards

I recently had to write a review for a home study piano course called ‘Piano For All’, I loved the method they used for teaching. The methods for teaching they used in this course impressed me a lot.You are then taught how to read those notes on the musical staff. The next step is to show you how to play a simple tune which uses all of the fingers, as a leaning aid. This melody is also written down in both easy to follow keyboard diagrams and traditional musical notation

This part of the lesson is done in a very short time. Now you are taught the three notes you will need to be able to play a basic chord. You are given a simple rhythm to play the chord to. You are then shown how to play the first note of the chord with your left hand only an octave further down the keyboard which forms the bass line. You are shown a new rhythm to follow which involves using both hands and then suddenly you find that you are actually playing beginners piano and it sounds musical and isn’t difficult in the least.

When you have this feeling easy to play, which will be almost straight away, you will then be shown a few more simple basic chords. By Using the rhythms they teach you and changing chords from one to the other making a chord sequence you now find yourself playing an authentic piano accompaniment to which you or another person might sing or play along to (This will all have happened in a matter of about 20 minutes or so). If you learn to play using this method you will discover that it is really simple and this will give you confidence in your playing leaving you with a taste for more. As you move on you are taught some more chords, different rhythms and tunes. All of what you play is printed as keyboard diagrams and on the musical stave too. You will be playing real sounding piano or keyboards in much less time than you imagined.

In my opinion this way of learning is one of the best as it encompasses playing many styles of music from classical to pop, rock, jazz and gospel. It also verses you in reading music as well as playing by ear.
